Risk mitigation for facility managers, strata, building owners and more

For anyone responsible for managing a building, or other physical space where people can be working in high-risk areas, proper risk mitigation assist in protecting people against the likelihood of an accident occurring. Risk mitigation can take on many forms, but when it comes to working at heights and roof access it generally means installation of a compliant safety system and having a procedure for workers to follow when using the system.

Architects and other building designers should also consider how a fall protection or safe access system can be incorporated into a building’s design, before it is built. By ensuring safety is adequately considered in the design phase, buildings can work from day one towards better protecting people.

Once a system is installed, it should be fully documented with plans, usage manuals and more to ensure that everyone coming on site to use it understands how to access these spaces safely as well as any system limitations.

Managing your duty of care as a contractor or service provider

Contractors, service providers and others that employ teams that enter worksites and use fall protection systems, there are three main aspects to managing the duty of care they hold.

First, they need to ensure any systems they are working on have adequate documentation and manuals. This helps to understand how the systems should be used as well as any limitations on its use that workers may need to be aware of.

Contractors and service providers should also have a comprehensive set of safe work method statements and instructions for completing work that teams can follow while out on site. These should be created in conjunction with the procedures for the safety systems the teams will be using.

Finally, employers should ensure their teams, subcontractors and employees have the skills they need to carry out all the work safely. These skills should be regularly refreshed and updated to ensure their knowledge stays current with industry best practice.

Ensuring you work at heights safely every time

For workers using fall protection and other safety systems to complete their jobs, they should ensure they have the skills and equipment required to do so.

Workers should have a solid understanding of what skills may be required to safely. Being trained to safely conduct work in high-risk environments is one of the most basic ways workers can protected themselves against the risks of injury.

Undertaking work in high-risk environments should also be done with the correct equipment. Having the correct, and most useable, PPE makes completing work easier. Workers with the correct equipment that is easy to use are more likely to use it, and therefore be safer at work.

Height safety systems and fall protection

Fall protection systems come in many shapes and sizes – knowing what works best for your situation will assist in keeping your team safe.

In many cases, there is building plant located on the roof that requires access in order to facilitate general maintenance. The team at HSE can bring decades of height safety and fall protection experience to provide a fully-compliant system, tailored to your needs that gives you protection and peace of mind.

Once a system is installed, it needs to be regularly maintained to keep it compliant with Australian standards and manufacturer instructions. HSE is a NATA-accredited fall protection system recertifier, with the widest scope of accreditation of any height safety company in Australia. Our team can provide regular reporting on the status of your system, to help make sure your building is compliant and that all workplace health and safety obligations are being met.

Safety training, PPE and safety equipment

Everyone working across the building, construction and other industries should have the skills and knowledge to not only complete their work, but to identify and mitigate any potential injury risks that can arise. HSE’s trainers can put together a complete training program for your team, covering all the critical skills they need. Our broad scope of courses can take workers just starting their careers, through to senior team leaders looking to expand their skills into advanced emergency response and rope access areas.

For those working with plant and equipment, HSE can also provide forklift licensing, plus elevating work platform licensing, including the industry-backed yellow card for those using EWPs less than 11m.

Our team can also supply a range of carefully selected PPE items so you have the equipment you need when putting your skills to work on a job site. Our Sydney showroom keeps a supply of popular items on-hand so you can make sure the gear you get is going to suit your needs and be easy to use.
